The pretty village of Dalkey on the southern tip of Dublin bay is a 25 minute DART coastal train journey (now available with Dublin’s single transport ticket – Leap Visitor Card) from any of the city’s DART stations. Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre is a visitor attraction which comprises of a fortified town house/small castle structure, an early Christian Church & Graveyard, a modern Heritage Centre and Writers’ Gallery. Offering guided tours all day. The experience includes interactive live theatre performance with costumed actors. You can also climb to the battlements with its magnificent views of sea and mountains. Or in complete contrast to the Living History tour, you can spend time browsing the interactive screens in the new state of the art Heritage Centre. If literary matters take your fancy, why not explore theWriters’ Gallery where over forty writers and creative artists from Joyce and Beckett to Bono and Binchy will grab your attention. To build your appetite before enjoying a lunch of local Dublin dishes, in one of the many Literary inspired restaurants or heritage bars in the village, why not add Maeve Binchy GuidedWalk (famous Irish contemporary writer) to your visit (bookings through Dalkey Castle). Take a stroll through the centuries and enjoy the sea air in the company of a local guide, and learn about Dalkey’s historical and literary gems. (Advance booking required) Starting from Coliemore Harbour in Dalkey you can travel back in time on a supervised ferry trip to Dalkey Island.With Ken as your Ferryman, visit the ancient 11th century church and marvel at the construction of the Martello Towers. The origins of Dalkey Island go back 6,500 years, so you can walk the paths where the Vikings held a slave camp in the early 900s. As an alternative to a village lunch stop, why not plan a picnic as part of your trip and get away from it all, only five minutes from the mainland.
